Reducing Test Anxiety through Classical Music

Derek Mauldin

The purpose of the study was to reduce student test anxiety by listening to relaxing classical music during testing. The participants in the study were 34 fifth grade students aged 11 and 12. The class consisted of 20 boys and 14 girls. During the intervention, classical music was played during the regularly scheduled weekly math facts and reading comprehension tests. The math facts test was a four minute timed multiplication facts test. The reading comprehension test was an open book test that generally takes students 30 to 45 minutes to complete. It is based on the previous week's reading and includes a multiple choice vocabulary and reading comprehension section, followed by a short answer comprehension section. The chosen music selection was Dreaming Adagios, a compilations of relaxing classical music. The week data gathering period and analysis yielded no notable positive effects. Test score averages across the class did not improve and two students complained that the music was distracting, thus ending the intervention. Because multiple students say they found the music distracting, I felt a professional obligation to honor my teaching responsibilities and abandon my research.
