Art with a Mission

In Jackson County it is estimated that there are approximately 2200 homeless youth. Many homeless children in our area find them selves without shelter for various reasons including unsafe home environments, parents loosing a home to foreclosure or eviction, and even abandonment. While there are assorted homeless shelters located in Medford, none of them are able to take in minors without the presence of a parent. Hearts with a Mission provides an exception to this rule, and is able to serve children who are between the ages of ten and seventeen years old. The mission provides for many needs, as well as food, shelter, clothing, and safe refuge. They provide emergency care for homeless youth for up to 120 days, and can take in as many as 16 children at one time. While working with the mission, I had the opportunity to provide a creative arts program to the children. The creative art projects gave the children an opportunity to express themselves in a healthy manner, to have control of something in their lives when so much else is unpredictable, and gave them a chance to discover new talents and interests; building on positive self-esteem.
