Orff Schulwerk, also known as the Orff process, is a creative and comprehensive method for introducing and teaching music. Creators, Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman, incorporated singing, movement, playing, improvisation, and the natural rhythm of words to promote and nurture creativity, musicality, and musical literacy in children. Schools throughout the world utilize this participatory approach. The Key School in Annapolis Maryland is a shining example music education through Orff-Schulwerk In February, 2013, six members of the SOU chapter of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) along with their advisor, Dr. Fredna Grimland, traveled to The Key School for observations in music classrooms. This presentation will give a basic overview of Carl Orff, a brief explanation and demonstration of the Orff-Schulwerk process, and share the observations that were made at the Key School in Annapolis.
