I have been volunteering in a second grade classroom at Shasta Elementary School and wanted my project to help benefit those students. A big focus with Klamath County School District is reading and literacy. I decided to do research about why literacy is important with young children, learned about different techniques an adult can do when reading with children, learned about our local library and the resources they have. I also wanted to learn more about the DIBELS testing, what it tests and why it is important. I wanted to know how to determine what books are level appropriate for the students. All this information I was curious about and researched. I created my findings into a PowerPoint and had some activities to set up a family literacy night with the struggling readers of the classroom.
