Children are the most vulnerable population in our community and once they enter the foster care system the challenges they have faced become even more significant with living adjustments, schedule changes and emotions that are difficult to manage. These children are expected to attend class, often the very next day after entering foster care, and expected to perform and produce for their teachers and peers. Staffing reflects children entering care in our county have significant difficulties in one or more subjects, primarily reading and mathematics. Budget deficits are a barrier to providing paid tutor services. I have created a volunteer tutor program focused on serving children in foster care who have been identified by their case worker, family, CASA advocate, teacher or community partner. Designing advertising, training, curriculum tool-kits, goal setting, referral processes and evaluation are all developmental components for the program. We currently have a waiting list with children eager to be matched with a tutor. I have coordinated tutoring for three children and look forward to fulfilling all identified needs with a focus on building a sustainable program with the DHS Volunteer Tutor Team!
