The purpose of this research is to test Routine Activities Theory by looking at academic cheating at a small Liberal Arts University. Cheating is a major issue at universities across the United States. "…60-70% of college students admit to cheating" (Shon, 2006, p. 144). Routine Activities Theory and cheating will be analyzed independently in order to fully understand the issues. There have not been many combined studies done on Routine Activities Theory and cheating. This study will help add to the literature in the criminal justice field. This paper will analyze the occurrences of academic cheating and how it is related to Routine Activities Theory. It is hypothesized that with the lack of a capable proctor during testing cheating rates will increase. This research may provide support suggesting that Routine Activities Theory works, that cheating at universities really is a problem and some possible policy implications that could result from this.
