Both nationally and locally, data shows that falls are the leading cause of accidental injury and death in people over the age of 65. Falls prevention education and fitness promotion to increase balance and strength could greatly reduce the incidence of preventable falls in this population. In our outcomes improvement project, we implemented a four-step fall prevention plan for a group of sixty five attendees that were over the age of sixty-five. The project consisted of a symposium including an educational falls prevention presentation, individualized senior fitness testing, action planning for all participants, and follow-up phone calls. In the spring of 2013, we will be handing the project over to junior Oregon Health and Science nursing students to re-test the participants to evaluate the success of the symposium and to assess the need for future implementation of this project with different individuals from this age group.
