Application of recycling education at Southern Oregon University and observed recycling behavior modifications.

The focus of this project was to determine if recycling education can reduce the contamination of SOU's recyclable materials. Comprehensive recycling education events were implemented during the Winter 2013 term in conjunction with SOU's participation in RecycleMania, an eight week recycling competition between over 600 colleges and universities in North America. The weekly interactive education events provided the campus community with an exciting way to learn about the complex recycling guidelines on campus. Community support in the form of gift certificates were offered as incentives for event participation. Weekly recycling and trash weights were tracked and contamination levels calculated. Data were used to observe any corresponding influences of recycling education and to monitor improvements in contamination rates of materials over a 7 week period. A 13% contamination rate was logged in the first pre-season week and a 6% contamination rate was recorded in the final week of education events. The observation of a reduction of recycling contamination levels during the weeks when education events occurred provides preliminary evidence that recycling education can assist improving recycling behavior. These results support further application of recycling education to continue the recycling program's successful reduction of landfill waste.
