Descriptive Analysis of US Incarceration Rates of African Americans 1960-2010

Michael Menefee

Large disparities exist within prison population incarceration rates of males by race. In 2010, African Americans were approximately 12% of the US population. However, the racial group is overrepresented amongst those incarcerated. Within the system of criminal justice, "the war on drugs", or as some have been cited as saying, "the war on blacks" has become a primary criticism from scholars who point to the public policies of the war on drugs as being the central cause for African American incarceration disparities. Using data from US Census and other Federal sources, this statistical analysis tests the hypothesis that the disparity has significantly increased since the emergence of the war on drugs.
