Previous research has suggested that individuals who maintain the notion that paranormal phenomena exist display hemispheric asymmetries, favoring the right hemisphere, when processing paranormal belief. To test the proposed hypothesis this study investigated participant spatial behavior and interpretation of lexical stimuli. In a non-clinical sample of 46 volunteers, the researchers assessed lateral and lexical processing biases as a function of participant magical ideation (assessed by the MI scale). Across line bisection and veering tasks, no significant results were obtained. However, notable trends (nonsignificant) were observed in hemispatial preference for high MI participants favoring the left. Within the lexical decision, task a significant positive correlation between low MI scores and number of incorrect responses for right visual field stimuli was reported. This finding possibly indicates that moderate ranges of magical ideation are associated with a decrease in left hemispheric dominance for linguistic capabilities.
