Engaging Students In Multicultural Curriculum

The purpose of this action research project was to involve students in learning about American Indian cultures. The sixth grade social science book on ancient civilizations hardly even mentions the civilizations of North America. I felt that by learning about different North American Indian tribes, students could connect history with current cultures. My participants were thirty-one sixth graders in an elementary classroom setting. I used existing research, student writing prompts/responses, student assignments/surveys, and a teacher interview to gather information to better engage students in learning about American Indians. Overall students were engaged and enthusiastic in learning about this subject. They were able to think critically about stereotypes, misconceptions, and current issues. I learned through this project that students are very curious about American Indian culture, and are able to learn and grow by engaging in activities surrounding multiculturalism.
