Developing Literacy Through Digital Audio-Books

As co-researchers, four student-teachers have recruited five participants at their respective schools, provided the participants with inexpensive MP3 players, and loaded the devices with several audiobooks. The purpose of the proposed study was to investigate how elementary public school students might benefit from the availability and use of free audiobooks available on the Internet. In addition, we expected that students and their families might have gained some degree of technical expertise by learning where to locate free, open source digital resources, and by loading audiobooks to an MP3 device. Finally, this project aimed to increase the competency of student-teachers to use digital tools in developing the literacy of emerging readers. Participants were asked to listen to any audiobook for at least 15 minutes a day, on a voluntary schedule. The data collected included pre and post surveys, DIBELS oral reading fluency scores, a log of daily listening experiences, and student-teacher journals.
