"Strain theory" is a major perspective in the sociological study of deviant behavior. In this presentation, I will first discuss at type of "loner deviance:" the range of behaviors that come under the heading of "self-injury." I will then use strain theory to analyze possible reasons self-injurers (typically girls)engage in the behavior.
