Integrating CBL into an Integration Course

My Biology and Society, Bi382, Integration class has had a community-based learning (CBL) component since I started teaching the class in 2002. The CBL activity is embedded into the course calendar and goals, involves hands-on activities, groupwork (usually), documentation of hours, plan, insurance liability waiver, reflection paper and oral and visual presentation. In the past, students worked on various projects related to the SOU arboretum (growing plants in the greenhouse, raised money for trees and food for work parties, organized community work parties, and information brochures). This year students collected plastic from their foods and then used the plastic to construct a 3-D mosaic wall-hanging of a globe depicting the large plastic dump in the Pacific Ocean. The mosaic is on display in Elmos on the NE brick wall. I will provide copies of the forms I use and an image of the mosaic to put on display.
