Activist Art (ArtH 345) explores and defines activism and the roles artists play in instigating change and igniting community involvement. Students are stimulated intellectually through assigned readings, writing assignments, and in-class discussion about the significant historical trends in activist art. Furthermore, students participate in a short-term community project where theories and concepts learned in class will merge with real-life situations. Student teams are paired with a community agency and together they explore successful strategies and approaches to art activism in relation to a specific theme which is mutually agreed upon by both parties. These meetings culminate into the development and implementation of an “activist” or “community based” project. At SOARS I plan to feature the outstanding Activist Art Projects of 2009 and 2010. I will be available to discuss the development and outcomes of each project.
