My capstone community-based learning (CBL) project was about teaching children at ScienceWorks about the relationship between primary and secondary colors by mixing food coloring. I used a color wheel to introduce the primary colors red, yellow, and blue. The secondary colors were precut wedges that could be placed on the color wheel and removed by students. Making glob allowed children to discover which primary colors are needed to create secondary colors. The lesson began with circle time when I introduced the lesson and activity. While children engaged in the activity, I enjoyed witnessing their reactions as they saw science at work as borax and glue combined to form the glob and by mixing colors. Children were able to learn about secondary colors through discovery by combining primary colors. This activity allowed me to use my skills outside an academic setting and demonstrated my role as a teacher in multiple contexts.
