For our Capstone Community Based Learning project we taught hula to a group of children between the ages of 4-7 at Science Works. We decided to teach the song "Keiki O Ka Aina" which translates to "Children of the Land." This was a significant song to us because we both participated in performing it when we were younger, just as most children do in Hawai'i. Many families have not had the chance to visit Hawai'i, therefore bringing hula to them gives them the opportunity to experience a different culture. Hula holds a great significance for the Hawaiian people because it celebrates the art of storytelling. Hula is expressed through hand and facial expression. Through this process we've gained more insight into our teaching abilities and come to understand ourselves better. We feel that the children who participated in our class enjoyed themselves and were able to connect the music to the meaning of the song. Note: Group project with Chanel Sniffen
