Classroom Climate and its effects on Hispanic Students’ Sense of Belonging

This study looked at the relationship of classroom participation and the sense of school belonging of Hispanic students. Students who identified as Hispanic were recruited on-line via e-mails to participate in a survey. A total of 19 Southern Oregon University students of Hispanic ethnicity participated in this study. Participants read and rated statements regarding classroom participation and sense of belonging in school. Results revealed that students who felt they were free to disagree with instructors were more likely to feel they belonged at Southern Oregon University. Also, students who felt they had more opportunity to discuss ideas with other students were more likely to feel enthusiastic about the university.
