The purpose of the present study was to test the relationship between Native Americans' strength of cultural identity and self-esteem. Male and Female college students and faculty (N = 9) were given a Web link to the Implicit Association Test (IAT) and also administered Rosenberg's self-esteem measure after taking the IAT. Scores for the IAT and Rosenberg were compared using Pearson's r to ascertain any correlation between the IAT scores and self-esteem. Results indicated a statistically significant negative correlation between the strength of Native Identity as American and self-esteem; as Native identity as American increased, self-esteem decreased. These results may influence future research by Native scholars and mental health counselors.
