Efficacy of Traditional Native American Practices: Powwow Gatherings and Sweat Lodge Ceremony

This study was instigated by David West MA, Director of the Native American Studies Program at Southern Oregon University. West wanted to investigate how veterans were affected by their participation in powwow gatherings and Sweat Lodge Ceremonies, in particular, how participation in these events affected veterans' sobriety and PTSD symptoms. The researchers investigated effects of PTSD on veterans, the etiology and symptomology of the disorder, and the current, most efficacious treatments, as well as Native American Medicine, powwow gatherings and Sweat Lodge Ceremony. This study consisted of an interview and survey of veterans at the 12th annual Veterans Powwow at the White City VA. Results indicate that those two traditional practices have a positive impact on veteran's lives, sobriety and PTSD and to a high degree.
