Bullying and other forms of peer harassment occur frequently in school settings. The purpose of this presentation is to describe the prevalence of various forms of harassment, including cyber-bullying, among youth in this geographic region and to discuss its impact on victims' social and psychological well-being. We intend to share data describing the impact of bullying and other forms of harassment upon victims' self-esteem. connectedness to school and community, and overall mental health. In addition, based upon our data, we will discuss the important role of protective factors, such as peer and family support, in mediating the effects of bullying, both in and out of school. Our presentation will also include the development of a new instrument for collecting information on students' perceptions of cyber-bullying and other forms of harassment as part of an international study on this topic supported by SOU's President's Research and Scholarship fund.
