In December 2011, Erika Leppmann (acting director of the Schneider Museum of Art) and Holly Kilpatrick (current SOU student) received a President's Mini-Grant to research the best practices and innovations in Exhibitions Interpreters (E.I. or Docent) programs by conducting site visits to successful regional museums to interview staff and docents about innovations in museum education. Based on this research, Leppmann and Kilpatrick together generated a prototype Exhibition Interpreters handbook for future use at SMA. SMA has the opportunity and obligation to introduce, engage, and educate students and the regional population about art and its importance. An Exhibitions Interpreters Program can help reach the SOU community, local schoolchildren, and community organizations through guided tours, events, art projects, and materials. In this demonstration, Leppmann and Kilpatrick will lead attendees on a demonstration tour of the museum's current exhibition to showcase the template resulting from their research.
