Foster Children Dental Health

In the state of Oregon it is mandated that a child newly placed in foster care must receive a dental assessment within 30 days. Data collection from surveys to foster parents and dental providers confirmed that the mandate was not being met in the Josephine and Jackson County areas, due to a lack of dentists accepting Oregon Health Plan (OHP). The nursing students used this information to propose collaboration between DHS and the dental offices that would designate an employee from both organizations to communicate monthly concerning OHP acceptance status and availability according to age. The proposal was discussed with dental offices through informational sessions to concomitantly raise awareness. Efforts to establish the communication system have begun. Mid-Rogue Health Plan and future nursing students will evaluate the effectiveness of the proposal by measuring whether or not foster children are meeting the mandate during the spring 2012 term.
