Research results show that frequency of marijuana use combined with age of first use amongst the mentally ill population increases the risk of early onset psychosis and psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia. The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of marijuana on the community and determine the need for interventions including education, for patients, providers, and families. A chart audit of 272 patients admitted to the Behavioral Health Unit at Rogue Valley Medical Center was conducted to obtain data related to marijuana use in the local mentally ill population. Results showed that 37.1% of patient's had a history of marijuana use. However, interpretation of the results is limited by absence of marijuana screening using a standard drug panel and inaccurate charting of marijuana use. The conclusion, marijuana screening should be conducted on patients to collect accurate data for the purpose of potentially linking psychosis with marijuana use to the inpatient population.
