Bullying has been an issue for generations but in today's society we see it predominating in our schools. I have observed children from the ages of 3-5 bullying their peers and families believing it is okay because young children of this age don't know what bullying is: therefore it is not bullying. Through the use of Second Step program that is taught in our classrooms the children can learn and practice self-regulation skills. The skills that are taught are foundational to having empathy, managing emotions and solving problems. The training that is provided for the community based learning project is to help bring this education out of the classroom and into the homes. It is to help build a partnership with the families and have them learn more about our Second Step Curriculum and Bullying/Prevention and how to help teach these self regulating skills in the home.
