Regular at-home reading helps children develop their literacy skills. Studies have shown that early literacy skills are directly linked to children's success in learning to read. Being able to read has a direct correlation to future life success. The harsh reality is that in low-income areas the ratio of books to children is one book to 300 children. Having books at home is a luxury, not a reality. Together with my preschool students we collected 589 books that we cleaned and made book bags to give to children at a local youth center. Not only did the children at the youth center benefit, but my preschool students and I also came away with the knowledge we had made it possible for other children to enjoy literature. There is joy and a sense of accomplishment when you are able to make a positive difference in your community.
