This is a community health assessment of the elderly population in Jackson County, focusing on falls and fractures. The goals of this project are to 1) determine what are the main causes of falls and 2) identify ways to prevent future falls. Records from the Jackson County Medical Examiner and key informant interviews have shown that falls are the leading cause of accidental injury and death in this population. Each year, unintentional falls and fractures lead to increased medical costs, decreased quality of life, unnecessary burden on families, and can ultimately lead to death. It is important to increase awareness in the elderly population and in the medical community in order to decrease the number of preventable falls.
