Tourette Media

Micah Parce

Tourette syndrome is a topic in this country that receives a horrible representation from the media. There are people like the YouTube personality "Tourette's Guy" who find it funny to make fun of the disease. The truth is that rarely do those with Tourette syndrome uncontrollably yell obscenities. Only around ten to fifteen percent of those with Tourette syndrome suffer from coprolalia, which is the uncontrollable yelling of obscenities, and echolalia, which is the uncontrollable need to repeat other people's words. It is things that the media produces like "Tourette's Guy" that cause people with Tourette syndrome to be ashamed of their disease and to have social anxiety. My presentation will be about ways that will help those with Tourette syndrome feel more comfortable about their disease.
