Oregon has the fourth highest rate of homelessness in the United States and Jackson County has the highest percentage of homeless in the entire State. There are many different reasons for being homeless; child abuse, mental disorders, drug and alcohol abuse, low income, etc. Someone experiencing homelessness may not be able to rent a motel or couch surf with friends, thus limiting their options for shelter during the night. One possibility would be a homeless campsite where people can sleep, use community facilities and cook food. The City of Ashland's last snap shot of the homeless population was approximately 200 people for all the reasons mentioned earlier and more. The intention of my research is to examine other cities, with designated homeless campsites, and consider if it would be a viable option for the City of Ashland.
