Southern Oregon University's new recycling program has yet to be formally evaluated. While the program will require evaluation on many levels, the response of students, staff, and faculty can help recycling coordinators better understand audience opinions in behavior. Our research explores the perceived barriers to on-campus recycling for students, staff, and faculty at SOU. We administered a formal questionnaire to 72 students and staff to evaluate attitudes and behaviors regarding on-campus recycling. Responses indicate that while on-campus recycling is utilized and valued by most, there is room for improvement to reduce perceived or actual barriers. Based on our results, we conclude that student/staff/faculty participation in on-campus recycling could be increased by better placement of existing recycling bins, an increase in the number of recycling bins on campus; and a clearer labeling system indicating what should be placed in those bins. Our research has the potential for direct impact on campus as an early formative evaluation of recycling response and proposals for program improvement.
