This poster asks a pivotal question in the design of a typical academic building: What might be learned from the design, construction, and operation of the places where formal education occurs? In order to successfully achieve campus sustainability goals, buildings must consider environmental performance holistically, evaluating the interrelatedness of impacts and types of rating systems as a means for improvement. By integrating principles of ecological design as well as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building fundamentals, the poster looks at how architecture can be a liberal education that includes virtually every discipline in the catalog. By placing ecology in the foreground of design, ecological design provides specific ways of minimizing energy and materials use, reducing pollution, preserving habitat, and fostering community. The intention of this poster is to act as a starting point for rethinking the pedagogical capacity of ecological design at Southern Oregon University.
