Good Nutrition Explorers

Melanie Sprague

My Community Based Learning project was done at Abraham Lincoln Elementary school in Medford. My goal was to explain to first graders the importance of good nutrition and exercise. We had a guest speaker, Cynthia McCarty, Dental Prevention Program Manager, who engaged the students by teaching them how to be food label "detectives". For this project, we had two education centers; one center had the students creating food plates that included one food from each of the five food groups. These foods were glued to a paper plate to take home. The second center had boxes and cans with food labels and magnifying glasses for each student to look for sugars that are bad for our bodies. Lastly, we joined together a list of fun exercises they can enjoy daily. The children were sent home with puzzles and information to share with their parents.
