For my capstone I created an English Literature unit called "Do Not Read This Book!" surrounding banned books and censorship. The unit is for 10th to 12th graders and encompasses banned picture books, short stories, and novels. Students are broken into five literature circle book groups and also have an all-class read. Through reading banned books, students become more aware of how they are still censored in the present day. They also learn to fight for their rights and discover the importance behind sometimes controversial material as this material presents real life issues with young adult texts and helps the students to understand themselves better.
