A group of parents who had children with Down syndrome created an organization called the Down Syndrome Parent Association in 1979. Then in 1993 it became the Down Syndrome Association of Southern Oregon. The goals are to: 1) provide support and resources, 2) encourage active participation in the community, 3) foster positive attitudes, and 4) help individuals with Down syndrome reach their full potential. As members of the community we volunteered our time to this project to raise awareness of Down syndrome in the Rogue Valley by volunteering at their special events and by posting flyers about upcoming events in local schools between Ashland and Grants Pass. We learned the importance of inclusion and acceptance of individuals with exceptionalities within our community.
