Bullying, an act of violent behavior that includes verbal harassment, physical assault, and coercion. Bullying is increasingly recognized as a serious problem in schools throughout the United States and other countries. In collaborating with the youth pastor at Jacksonville Calvary Church, we created a four week unit on how to recognize characteristics of bullying, what to do if someone is being bullied, and how to prevent it from happening. During the lessons, students were able to speak out about personal situations they have witnessed or experienced with bullying and practiced role playing real life scenarios. They also learned skills to become peer mediators in their community, to assist others in aggressive circumstances before they become unmanageable interactions. As with anything in life, prevention begins with knowledge. This project educates children and parents to know that bullying is not normal, should not be allowed, and that it's okay to tell someone.
