Research has shown that children who participate in community events develop stronger pro-social behaviors, are less likely to break civil laws, and perform better in school. With the objective of reaching out to, and providing support for, disadvantaged youth, the Medford YMCA hosts the Mayor's Cup race. This event runs in conjunction with the Pear Blossom festivities and promotes community support of all health seekers in pursuit of well-being in spirit, mind and body. Concurrently, the Mayor's Cup race is also a fundraiser with a purpose of raising funds to provide scholarships for low-income youth. These scholarships can be used for participation in sports, day camps, and YMCA youth memberships. This event had 1,650 participants and raised $5,000 to be deposited into the scholarship fund. The success of this event is one ounce of prevention to help youth overcome their hardships and succeed in life.
