Where Students and Nature Collide

Tim Mikels

The funding of educational extra-curricular activities is becoming less available. Due to this problem, students are less likely to get the opportunity to explore the world around them. This project is about bringing young students out into nature and giving them the opportunity to connect with the amazing environment just a short distance away. During this project, a group of ten pre-adolescent homeschooled students were taken on a camping expedition to the Oregon Coastline. While on this trip the students got to study creatures that live in the tide pools, plants that grow in the redwood forest, and practice appropriate social skills and behavior. This project reached out to the community and helped these students create lifelong memories of the beauty and richness of our Oregon Coast and Redwood forest.
