Storytelling is an age-old way of passing on knowledge, folklore, myths, and legends. It can greatly impact students schooling, through enhancing vocabulary, oral fluency, and recall. These ideas were explored in a second grade classroom at Mae Richardson Elementary. A unit on folktales was taught through storytelling, related activities, and writing. After each folktale was told to the students, they were asked to participate in different hands-on activities that stretched their comprehension of the story. In one such activity, groups of four were asked to retell a story just told to them. The students had to recall the events of the story, sequence them, and use group storytelling and listening skills. The class also wrote many of their own colorful folktales. Overall, the students were impacted greatly by the introduction of storytelling in their classrooms. They were empowered to tell their own stories and learn from this enriching art form.
