Catechins of Mahonia aquifolium

Jon Hatfield

Natural products are a group of organic chemicals produced by living organisms. These compounds display a wide range of interesting properties. Whether treating cancer, dying cloth, or cultivating crops, from time immemorial mankind has used these compounds for revolutionary and mundane purposes. Mahonia aquifolium, colloquially known as the Oregon Grape, has spurred recent interest due to its history of medicinal uses. These qualities are primarily attributed to berberine, a member of the alkaloid class of natural products. While research into Mahonia aquifolim's alkaloids has been rigorous other classes have not been explored. This research has focused on isolating catechins, the most prevalent subgroup of flavonoid natural products, a class known for their antioxidant activity. HPLC of chemical standards was used to develop a protocol to detect and identify catechins from a Mahonia aquifolium extract. Future research will focus on characterizing these catechins in terms of their antioxidant activity and structure.
