For my Community Based Learning Project, I completed a project with the students in my preschool classroom regarding safety. The parents of my students requested support to help their children understand safety procedures in the event of an emergency, and become familiar with community helpers. We met with a police officer and also took a field trip to the fire station to meet fire fighters in our community. The children and families were able to create a safety plan if there were a fire in their home. We studied stranger danger, when to use 911, gun safety, fire safety, and parking lot safety. We also created experiences in the classroom for the children to apply their newly learned skills during emergency drills and reenactments. After the completion of this project, the parents were encouraged to routinely discuss these procedures at home and continue to discuss safety with their children.
