Personality and a Veterans Transition Back to Civilian Life.

Kevin Hoeper

Personality can play a huge role in how someone handles stress. Veterans can experience a large amount of stress during their service. My research has focused on how a veteran's personality can affect their transition to civilian life. I used the Combat Exposure Scale to gage the level of danger a veteran experienced during their time served in the military. I then used the Beck's Depression and anxiety questionnaires along with the Civilian Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist to determine how a soldier's combat exposure affected their psychological wellbeing. This information was then compared to the participant's personality type as determined by the 8 International Personality Item Pool to see which personality may result in the best transition back to civilian life. Hopefully this information will give us a better understanding in how to help veterans transition back to civilian life.
