Alzheimer's disease: A neurologic disorder on the rise

Amy Wilson

Since 2000, deaths in the United States due to major diseases such as HIV, stroke, heart disease, etc. have all dropped. However, deaths from Alzheimer's disease have increased approximately 66%. Alzheimer's Disease is a form of dementia that is progressive, degenerative, and the 6th leading cause of death in America. An individual with this disease will experience loss of or damage to neurons resulting in memory loss, behavioral changes, and the inability to effectively function (for example thinking, language, and movement may be inhibited). Currently there is no solution to prevent, slow down, or cure Alzheimer's disease. This presentation's objective is to enhance the awareness of the Alzheimer's epidemic while reviewing the possible etiology behind the disorder. Through a scholarly review of contemporary research, future directions of medical solutions will be examined and discussed.
