The effects of music on feelings of spirituality.

Kendra Hutcheson

Any minister can attest to the powerful affect music can have on a congregation. In fact, both the experience of spirituality and, at least partially, the ability to process music emotionally have been linked to the parietal lobe. In this experiment, participants were asked to complete the Spiritual Attitude Inventory in the Southern Oregon University music media lab while listening to either classical, jazz, or no music. The survey was preceded by approximately 30 seconds of music listening or silence. The results of this study will indicate whether music can influence spirituality in this particular controlled setting.
