Effectiveness of Multi-Jurisidictional Drug Task Forces

Desiree Badizadegan

The following paper is a response to a request generated by the Oregon Criminal Justice Commission (OCJC) in an attempt to determine the best evidence-based practice approach to distribute Byrne Grant funding amongst drug courts, prisoner re-entry programs, and multi-jurisdictional drug task forces (MJDTF). A concise collection of information regarding multi-jurisdictional task forces (MJTF) and their effectiveness was needed to make critical decisions on the future of Oregon task forces. A number of advantages and disadvantages to MJTF are discussed. In addition, ways in which these task forces may become more effective are addressed. It became apparent that additional research is still needed to determine the effectiveness of MJTF. In the end, the OCJC cut MJDTF funding as the evidence was available to strongly support funding for drug courts and prison reentry programs but was lacking in the MJDTF area.
