Hula has history because the Spanish Missionaries changed the Hawaiian's original hula traditions. For instance, the Missionaries created a written language for the Hawaiians and required them to wear missionary clothes when they danced. Due to the Missionaries bringing diseases, many dances and stories were lost due to the high death casualties. Hawaiians used dances to tell their stories of their ancestors instead of having a written language so, when the Missionaries created a verbal and written language for them; it took hula's main purpose away. When the Missionaries were first introduced to hula they considered it to be barbaric, and for a period of time forbid the Hawaiians to dance. I will inform the audience about the Hawaiian's symbolism behind chanting before each hula performance and the Hawaiian bloodline. I will also show how the dance form evolves as the Hawaiian people were invaded and converted by the Missionaries.
