China was once a country where only physically and mentally able people had a voice in politics. According to an article by Thomas C. Weiss, the disabled of China had little freedom of expression and no place in society. Partially due to the limit on the amount of children allowed per family, a child born with disabilities was seen as a burden and a disgrace. Since then, these people have found a way to shine, resulting in a much-needed change in Chinese society's perspective. Today, both mentally and physically disabled people have gained notoriety and even fame through dance. Programs and companies like China Disabled People's Performing Art Troupe (CDPPAT) have given these people a chance to prove their worth. This troupe performs all over the world, gaining honor and admiration for the people of China. Once ostracized by society, the disabled of China have found liberation and respect through the healing power of dance.
