Salsa: A Comparison of A Cultural New York and A Commercial New Jersey

Payne! Smith

Salsa dance split into two distinct forms in the 1990's. The 1980's cultural revival of salsa in New York, came to New Jersey and mixed with several other dance forms including mamba and samba, even things like tap, ballroom and swing. Many Latinos do not believe that the newer version of salsa is true to their culture. In this poster presentation, I will compare the New Jersey and New York styles to see whether or not the popular ballroom version that one sees on shows like "So You Think You Can Dance" and "Dancing with the Stars" is an accurate representation of the cultural dance that followed immigrants from their Latin Cultures to New York.
