Zombies, spells, sacrifices and black magic are the makeup of many old Hollywood B movies. In reality, these are negative western connotations associated with the Haitian religion, Vodou. The western culture and belief system has built up a negative association to this Haitian religion. For those who practice, Vodou gave people solace, self-empowerment, and a sense of communal identity during their war of independence. Brought to the island of Haiti by African slaves, Vodou is a fusion of African traditions symbolized through the movement and dance of rituals. Despite pedestrian beliefs, Haitian Vodou dance is an outlet of self identification and healing, containing modalities common in parts western culture and religion.
