The Ionization of Argon Gas using A Hot Filament Ionization Source

Steven Reddell

The purpose of this study is to maximize the number of Ar ions produced. These ions are produced via Ar and energetic electron collisions. This number cannot be affected directly. Instead it will be approximately maximized by maximizing the probability of ionization Pi. This probability is the ratio of the number of Ar ions collected and the number of ionizing electrons created. This will be done by optimizing five experimental parameters. These parameters are: The pressure of the vacuum chamber used; the current used to generate the electrons; the voltage used to accelerate the electrons and the relative spacing of three pieces of apparatus.
