Schneider Museum of Art

Volunteer Your Time And Talents!

Would you like to share volunteer work with friendly, enthusiastic people? Would you like to expand your own knowledge of art while making a lasting contribution to your community? If so, we invite you to join the volunteer program at the Schneider Museum of Art.

You do not need an art background to become a volunteer. The only prerequisites are an ability to relate to people of different ages and a desire to learn and share your knowledge.

The descriptions below will give you an idea as to some of the volunteer activities currently functioning at the museum. Volunteering at the museum is a wonderful way to participate in your community, to appreciate art, and to open the eyes of others to the beautiful world of art available at the museum!

  • Front Desk Attendant
Although work study students handle most of the front desk duties during the school year, there is a need for volunteers. Our summer schedule is staffed exclusively by volunteers. Front desk duty is not a demanding task. It requires that you be friendly and helpful, but not necessarily an expert on art. Being a front desk attendant is one of the best ways to be of service to the museum. You can sign up for two hour blocks as your schedule dictates. Some people like to schedule the same day and time throughout the summer.
  • Docents
Docents conduct tours for groups and talk about the art.  You do not need an art background to become a docent.  The only prerequisites are an ability to relate to people of different ages and a desire to learn and share your knowledge.  Docents participate in weekly training sessions in January, February, and March where they will learn touring techniques, teaching methods, formal analyses of works of art, and the creative techniques artists use.  If interested, please call Rebecca Olien at the Schneider Museum of Art for more information (552-6389) or go to the "Become A Docent" page to learn more.
  • Receptions
The museum hosts an Opening Reception each time there is an exhibition change over. Museum volunteers help with these receptions by arranging, preparing and serving food and beverages at the reception and also serving as greeters to the public.
  • Special Events
Volunteering in this area covers many types of events, such as:
    • First Fridays
    • Artist Studio Tours
    • Guest Lectures
    • Children’s Art Workshops
    • Fundraising Events
